We have talked with many parents and worked with many students, number one concern is their writing skill regardless of their different age groups and backgrounds.
Why is writing so important, especially in today’s world? Writing is basically a communication tool in a written form and will be used in any type of work. Writing is the therapy, a tool to express the emotion, reduce the stress and develop kids’ creativity, imagination.
What makes a good piece of writing? The structure, punctuations, capital letter are not hard to train the students. The biggest challenge to train them is brainstorming the ideas, and how to deliver them, how to make it more interesting and people can relate to it. It is the combination of logic, emotion, life experiences.
How to express their emotion, thoughts and ideas freely, yet in a structure that can capture readers’ attention. How can the centre help them? Practice, practice, with different text types. Reading comprehension actually helps as well. It broadens kids’ knowledge about different topics. It also inspires them to write like authors do.
There is a big question ‘As a parent, how can I help? ‘The best thing you can help your kids with writing and also strengthen your relationship is just asking questions and active listening.
Tell me about your experiences? What do you think of that? What do you like most? Imagine if…, what would you do? Why do you think so? Can you give me an example? In any experience in life, you can ask them these questions, show interest in what they’re doing, and listen in depth. This will definitely help them develop ideas, getting into a habit of reflecting the experience. You can leave spelling, structure, grammar, punctuations to us to train them. Hope your kids will enjoy the art of writing and find it a great use in their life.
