Time flies so quickly. It’s already mid-September, and school holidays are just around the corner!
This is a beautiful time for our children to reset and recharge, (not so much for parents, except we do enjoy a break from pick-up and drop-off). Our children can sleep in, wake up without an alarm, and enjoy a break from structured timetables and busy schedules.
During the school term, children spend so much time doing what is expected of them by school, teachers and parents. School holidays give them the freedom and space to come back to their essential selves -to discover what they naturally enjoy when nobody is telling them what they should be doing.
Ask your child, “What would you really like to do during the holidays?” (And, of course, we don’t mean spending the whole day on the phone and video games)
You might discover that they want to paint or make crafts, read and write, go swimming, ride their bike, play music, spend time in nature, catch up with friends, or work on their own little project. Give them a little boredom because when children have nothing planned, that’s when their playfulness and creativity and natural interests emerge.
That’s one of the reasons why we don’t run classes during the school holidays at Lilydale Tuition Centre, and we don’t give English and Maths homework over the break. We want our students to have time to do the things they’ve been wanting to do but haven’t had time for during a busy school term.
As parents, especially working parents, we can’t always be with them. But we can ask what they’d like to do, give them some options and spend time with them whenever we can.
It’s time to explore somewhere you’ve never been. Try something you’ve never done. Catch up with people you haven’t seen for a while.
